Operational Processes

Writer's picture: William GranthamWilliam Grantham

In the show we created there were several operational processes that had to be followed from conception to evaluation. This ensured we covered all the ground we had to and also so we wouldn't repeat ourselves.

Ideas Generation

The ideas generation stage started with a blank piece of paper. We had to have some initial ideas that we could whittle down and to start refining the final one we would use and develop further. We started with 10 ideas to start then took 5 off that we felt wouldn't work or we didn't like. After that we then took another 2 ideas off so we were left with 3. This then gave us an opportunity to vote based on the best idea we had and what could be pulled off the best. Once w had the idea of 'Were you paying attention' we could develop it further by having a format ad a way of winning and how we would build the show from the ground up.

Job Roles

There were a set number of job roles we needed to fill that were required to make the production work. This were included in all 3 main stages of production, pre production, production and post production. There were separate ones for each section but we had to fill them all with some people having multiple jobs. We decided to compile everyones skills into a skills audit so we could find the best people for each job based on their skills. I personally took on the roles of script writer, camera operator, graphic designer and a bit of editing thrown in.

Pre Production

The pre production stage begins with paper work that is required to start the show such as risk assessments, blocking plans and call sheets. These were done by various people within the group based on who was given the job role. 3 of the group were given the pre production document tasks, they split up the documents between them to complete. For this part I focused on the script and creating the graphics and titles for the show. With the graphics, another member of the group gave me a hand with creating the logo by starting out creating some ideas that would give me an outline to what the graphics would look like.

Run Throughs

Run throughs are essential to having the show well rehearsed and so when we come to the actual filming everyone is well timed and we all know whats happening when. Normally the more you do, the better it goes in the final run. We practiced several times so we would be ready for the final run. These ranged in length from about 10 minutes to around 25. This was because we had some where we went through everything or other ones where we went through only certain bits so we were all on the same page.

Filming

The actual filming was similar to run throughs but we have all the elements we had been working on all together on screen. We had a few practice runs so on the day we were clued up into what the talent would do and how they would react to different parts of the script. We had several goes at a final run so we had range in different shots we could have from each take, it also gave us flexibility when filming so we didn't have too much of one person talking or different jokes in different parts or repeating jokes.

Editing

The edit was mainly left down to another member of the group and I was a consultant for ideas and help with the edit including the pace of the show and what music to use where. This worked well as we never clashed ideas or heads in anyway but allowed the project to come out better than it could've been without two people. I believe the edit wasn't as good as it could've been as some of the cuts were too slow and we didn't have any picture in picture for the challenges which took the audience out of the loop a bit and also didn't give context to what the contestants were talking about.

Evaluation

The evaluation videos were so as a group we were able to look back on how we had progressed as a group and also how our ideas had developed between each stage in the production. It will also allow us to focus down on the parts that didn't go so well and what we can implement to improves those areas.
